MARKHAM were tasked with providing a waterproofing and durability enhancement system for an aged reservoir structure at Sheriffs Mountain near Londonderry in Northern Ireland. This was part of an overall refurbishment program on the concrete structure of the reservoir. The main goal was to extend the lifespan of the structure and, to achieve this one of the key tasks was to reduce the permeability of the concrete, reducing the ingress of water and other contaminants that would degrade the concrete further.
The MARKHAM system put forward to achieve these goals was the spray application of AQURON 2000. This retro spray application provides a waterproofing solution that penetrates up to 150mm into the concrete. It was applied to the concrete walls, columns and base slabs of the structure.
As a VOC Free, Non-Hazardous, DWI Reg 31 approved product, suitable for use in locations used for the storage of potable water, AQURON 2000 was a very rapid and cost-effective solution for waterproofing the concrete structure, without any risk of contaminating the water or causing any potential damage to surrounding eco systems.
GWT Water Permeability Testing was carried out on the concrete before and after the application of AQURON 2000 and, the test results demonstrated almost a 96% reduction in the permeability of the concrete. This reduction will have a very significant effect in reducing the degradation of the concrete, giving a much-extended lifespan for this structure.
As AQURON 2000 is a product that penetrates deep into the concrete matrix, there are no ongoing maintenance requirements or operation costs making this solution a very attractive proposition in terms of the ongoing maintenance costs of the reservoir.
Project Details – Sheriffs Mountain Service Reservoir | |
Description | Waterproofing and corrosion prevention to an aged concrete reservoir structure |
Area Treated | 260m2. |
