Due to the use and age of these concrete structures, the concrete deterioration had reached a point where, without intervention, the Digestor Tanks would have had to have been taken out of service. The costs involved with taking such vital pieces of infrastructure out of service, demolishing them and the construction of new tanks would clearly be very high.
The objective given to MARKHAM in this situation was to extend the service life of these tanks and, in turn, save money, time, and ultimately increase the sustainability of these structures.
After MARKHAM had carried out a full jet wash process to clean the interior of the tanks and prepare the substrate, the MARKHAM system put forward to achieve these goals was the spray application of AQURON 7000.
This retro spray application provides a waterproofing solution that penetrates up to 150mm into the concrete, and contains a Migrating Corrosion Inhibitor (MCI) that will penetrate to the same depth to protect the steel reinforcement within the walls of the tanks, and the hydrogel protecting the concrete from the ingress of aggressive water and chemicals, and preventing further corrosion of the steel reinforcement bars within the existing and new parts of the structures.
As a VOC-free, Non-Hazardous, DWI Reg 21 approved product, suitable for use in locations used for anything to do with the water treatment industry, AQURON 7000 was a very rapid and cost-effective solution for waterproofing the concrete structures, without any risk of contaminating the water or causing any potential damage to surrounding ecosystems.
As AQURON 7000 is a product that penetrates deep into the concrete matrix, there are no ongoing maintenance requirements or operation costs, making this solution a very attractive proposition in terms of the ongoing maintenance costs of the Digestor Tanks.
With this depth of penetration, the AQURON 7000 is present within the matrix of the concrete for the lifespan of the concrete, making it a maintenance-free solution that won’t require any further applications.
